When we see a book by Stephen King, we assume a story full of rabid dogs and scary clowns. But a detective story? Surely not what we would expect. Mr. Mercedes is a classic tale – the good guy trying to find the bad guy. It is very much an honest detective tale, but packed with King’s grit, twist, and amazing character development. We follow Bill Hodges, a retired detective who is still very much haunted by his last major case, the criminal who got away: the Mercedes Killer. When Hodges receives an odd letter from someone claiming to be the killer, he jumps back into action to track him down. The book’s growth is jaw-dropping, and as always with King, bits of humor are thrown in as well. And bonus, it’s the first in a trilogy! If you’re looking for a quiet, easy-going detective story, Mr. Mercedes might not be for you. However, if you’re looking for an action-packed thriller but wanting to avoid Stephen King’s monster worlds, this is a great one to grab.
